Team South Africa Captain Ernie Els has made a bold statement ahead of the inaugural Icons Cup South Africa (11–13 December 2026), announcing the addition of two iconic national sports stars to his 14-man squad: Rugby World Cup winner Butch James and Proteas fast-bowling legend Vernon Philander.
Following the initial marquee announcement of cricket master AB de Villiers and rugby icon Fourie du Preez, Els’s is moving fast to build a powerhouse roster capable of defending home turf at The Links at Fancourt in George.
However, the home side faces formidable opposition in Team World, led by two-time Masters Champion and Ryder Cup legend José María Olazábal. Team World has already landed blockbuster blows of its own, confirming football royalty John Terry and West Indian cricket genius Brian Lara. With two elite squads taking shape, cross-sport rivalries and national pride will be put squarely on the line in front of a global television audience.
NEW ADDITIONS TO TEAM SOUTH AFRICA
- Butch James: A World Cup-winning fly-half and iconic Springbok who earned 42 caps for South Africa. Renowned for his fearless tackling, tactical authority, and cool head under pressure, James brings a fierce competitive edge and big-match temperament to the fairways.
- Vernon Philander: One of the most clinical seam bowlers in international cricket history, Philander took 224 Test wickets for the Proteas with legendary accuracy and control. An avid golfer, his famous precision translates effortlessly from the bowling crease to the golf course.
James and Philander join skipper Ernie Els, AB de Villiers, and Fourie du Preez in a Team South Africa lineup that is rapidly taking shape as a formidable force.
