SPRINGBOK LEGEND VICTOR MATFIELD JOINS TEAM SOUTH AFRICA FOR ICONS CUP GOLF CLASH

One of the most decorated and respected figures in global rugby, former Springbok captain Victor Matfield is officially swapping the pitch for the fairway to join Team South Africa. A World Cup winner in 2007, 127-Test veteran, and tactical mastermind, Matfield is also a dedicated, highly competent golfer. Known for his calm presence under extreme pressure and relentless focus, he brings another strong, confident set of hands to the host team's locker room. 

Matfield expands a stacked Team South Africa lineup led by captain Ernie Els, reuniting with fellow World Cup-winning rugby teammates Fourie du Preez, Butch James, and Schalk Burger, alongside cricket stars AB de Villiers, Shaun Pollock, and Vernon Philander.

They face a formidable challenge from José María Olazábal’s Team World roster, which boasts tennis icon Ash Barty, football stars John Terry and Dwight Yorke, cricket hero Yuvraj Singh, and West Indian legend Brian Lara. Matfield’s addition gives Team SA extra strategic depth as they look to lock down home fairways in George from 11–13 December 2026.
